South East Asia Summer School
Memorial University and the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) have agreed to establish a jointly taught Summer School to be held on a regular basis in the months of May and June at the beautiful campus of USM on the tropical island of Penang. The inaugural Summer School will be held in 2009 and will have the combined themes of Global Change and Malaysian/South-East Asian Studies. The Summer School will be of particular interest to Canadian and South-East Asian undergraduate students with interests in international business, international economics and international studies.
Summer School Program
A core program of three 3-credit hour courses (39 contact hours per course) will be taught over an 8-week period. The three courses will be a background course on Global Change and two 'regional' courses, one about Malaysian/SE Asia society with some attention to how it will be affected by and respond to Global change while the other will focus more on the economics/business/trade environment of Malaysia/SE Asia, again with some attention to the impact of and likely response to Global Change. For students who wish to obtain an additional 3-credit hours an additional supervised reading and research unit will be available.
Join a Select Group of International Participants
For 2009 it is intended to limit enrolment to between 24 and 40 students, with equal numbers of Canadian and South-East Asian students. The small number of participants and the format of classes has been deliberately chosen to maximize the opportunity for meaningful interaction between Canadian and South-East Asian attendees. Priority will be given to students from Memorial University and Universiti Sains Malaysia.
Who can attend
Students from any faculty in recognized Canadian and SE Asian universities may apply providing they have completed introductory courses in business and economics.
The cost and what it covers
All costs given here are out best estimates at this time but may vary if prices increase or numbers attending vary significantly from those anticipated. The Summer School fee is likely to be MYR9000 (around CAD3000). This will include accommodation and most daily meals (not dinner). It will also include course materials and a number of local field trips and excursions. Additional meal and local travel costs should not exceed CAD400. Students will need to pay for their own airfare (currently approx CAD1000), ground transportation. Insurance, some additional meals and incidentals.
International Leaders Forum on Global Change
Participants in the Summer School will have the opportunity to attend as observes a two-day International Forum on Global Change where government and business leaders from around the region will come together to exchange their views on the implications of and their likely responses to global change.
Successful applicants from Memorial University will be eligible for a travel scholarship of $750.
