Where can I get information about the business faculty at Memorial University?

When should I send my application?

The deadline for your application to reach our office is April 15 for the fall semester (September to December) and Sept. 15 for the winter semester (January to April). All of the necessary forms can be found in the Admissions section. Welcome packages will be sent to students as soon as they are accepted into the program.

When should I arrive in Newfoundland and after which date should I leave?

We recommend that students arrive 2 to 6 days prior to the start of classes to allow time to get oriented with St. John's and settle into your accommodations. Students should plan to leave after the last day of final exams (see University Calendar).

Will I have contact with my MUN mentor before my departure?

Your MUN Mentor will contact you prior to your departure. He or she can answer questions that you might have about student life, courses, Memorial University or St. John’s. If you haven't been contacted by your MUN mentor one week before your expected departure, please contact the Internationalization Office to obtain your MUN mentor’s contact information.

Who should I contact regarding my arrival time in Newfoundland?

You should complete the arrival form found in your welcome package and return it to the international programs office no later than Aug. 1 for the fall semester and Dec. 1 for the winter semester. Please include your arrival date, arrival time, airline and flight number. If you wish to be met at the airport, please also follow directions given in the answer below.

Will I be picked up at the airport?

You will be met at St John’s International Airport by representatives of the Internationalization Office (IO). They will ensure that you get a taxi to your on- or off-campus accommodation. Please visit the Internationalization Office (IO) for more information and to sign up for this service.

Are there any orientation activities?

The International Programs Office and the Internationalization Office (IO) office organize special activities for business exchange students throughout the semester. There are usually several activities during the first week of the semester. Previous activities have included dinner, hiking, boat tour, skating and a hockey game. There is also a mandatory information session for all business exchange students held on the Friday of the first week of classes.

What is the best way to get to Newfoundland?

We strongly suggest coming to Newfoundland by air. St John’s occasionally has a direct flight from London, England. Connecting flights can also be caught in Newark, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax. We advise trying to get the Halifax connection as it is about 1.5 hours by air from St John’s.

Remember that the airport code for St. John’s is YYT. There is a similar city in Canada called Saint John, New Brunswick and it is quite far from St. John’s.

How many courses do I need to take at Memorial?

The normal course load at Memorial is five per semester. However you may be able to take fewer. Students should consult with the exchange co-ordinators at their home institution to determine the acceptable number of courses to take while studying at Memorial.

When will I find out my course schedule?

After you have returned your course selection information, you will be notified by email of the steps you need to take to view your schedule on Memorial's Student Self-Service website.

Can I change my courses once I arrive at Memorial?

Yes, provided there is space available in the course you wish to take. You must get approval for the new course from your home university first and then visit the International Programs Office to fill out a course change form.

What is the class structure?

The majority of courses at the Faculty of Business Administration will involve group work on projects as well as midterm and final exams. Students can also expect to find a portion of their term grade given to class participation.

How do I know which textbooks to buy?

Instructors will distribute a course syllabus on the first day of class. This will describe the necessary textbooks. We do not recommend that students purchase textbooks prior to the start of class unless they are certain of the required text name and edition. In some cases, students are able to buy previously used textbooks from other students.

When do I pay my fees?

Students will automatically be sent an invoice that includes tuition to their home address. Please ignore this invoice as you are exempt from paying tuition at Memorial.

You may pay for your health insurance before arriving in Newfoundland or during the beginning of the semester. There are no late fees for exchange students if you pay this fee after the first day of classes; however, it is strongly recommended that you pay this fee by the second week of classes. You may wish to wait to pay your fees until after the orientation/welcome meeting.

Will I have Internet access?

Computer labs with Internet access are available in the Faculty of Business Administration building. Students who wish to bring a laptop will be provided with free wireless high-speed internet throughout campus. This is available upon arrival with a student ID card.
