Dr. Ashrafee Tanvir Hossain has completed a bachelor of science in information technology (2003) and a master of business administration (MBA) in finance (2005) from Virginia Tech. He finished a doctor of philosophy (PhD) in finance from Concordia University in 2013. While at Virginia Tech, Dr. Hossain was on Dean’s list throughout his undergraduate studies and eventually graduated with Summa Cum Laude. He was one of the most outstanding MBA students of the graduating class of 2005. Continuing his academic excellence, he won the prestigious ‘Joe Kelly Graduate Award for Outstanding Thesis’ at Concordia University. He is also a proud lifetime member of Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society.
Upon completing his PhD in Finance from John Molson School of Business, Dr. Hossain joined the Faculty of Business Administration (FBA) of the Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) in 2013. He has been actively participating in different initiatives to enhance the student experience at FBA since the beginning. Dr. Hossain worked diligently to get our B.Com, BBA, iBBA, and MBA programs certified by the CFA Institute University Recognition Program in 2015, one of only six (6) Canadian business schools to have achieved that feat at that time. Subsequently, he has worked along with the CFA Institute to get all of the aforementioned programs promoted to CFA Institute University Affiliation Program, an honor shared by only six other Canadian business schools. Dr. Hossain has been mentoring students in various aspects including CFA Level I exam preparation.
Dr. Hossain’s research interests include corporate finance, corporate governance, financial regulations, mergers and acquisitions, corporate social responsibility, and sustainability. His recent studies are focusing on political corruption, social capital and equality and how these issues influence the areas mentioned above. To date Dr. Hossain has published 30 peer-reviewed journal articles; 2 book chapters; and 20 conference proceedings. His papers have been presented in peer-reviewed conferences for 45 times. Dr. Hossain has worked with almost 50 coauthors from five (5) different continents. His work has been published in 18 different peer-reviewed journals, notably, Business & Society, The Financial Review, Journal of Financial Research, Accounting & Finance, Journal of Management & Governance, to name a few. His various other accomplishments include serving as Guest Editor of Managerial Finance, serving as ad hoc reviewer for many journals (e.g., European Journal of Finance, International Review of Economics and Finance, Journal of Management & Governance, Managerial Finance, Journal of Multinational Financial Management, to name a few), and serving as various roles in numerous national and international conferences (e.g., Financial Management Association, Northern Finance Association, Administrative Sciences Association of Canada, Southern Finance Association, Midwest Finance Association, World Finance and Banking Symposium, World Finance Conference, to name a few).
Dr. Hossain is a member of the CFA Institute and the only full-time tenured/tenure-track member of the FBA to hold the CFA Charter. He has been very dedicated to teach his students about ethics in work place, ethical investment, and ethics in their dealings with others. During his time at Memorial, he has won more than 50 internal and external grants. He has won the prestigious ‘FBA Teaching Fellowship’ sponsored by the Patten Family for 2017-18. He has recently secured external funding from Social Sciences and Humanities Council of Canada (SSHRC) for a topic related to political corruption and the role it plays in corporate policy making.
