Dr. Susan Hart has a number of years’ work experience in the public sector, in government administration and teaching, and in the private sector including working in the labour relations field and in a not-for-profit group promoting non-traditional work for women. Her research has largely focused on the links between industrial relations and the effectiveness of workplace policies on safety and gender equality. These interests are reflected in publications on health and safety (comparative regulatory studies, Norway, the United Kingdom and Canada), worker participation (Canada and Norway), safety management systems, helicopter safety (mainly in the context of offshore oil and gas and mining), and on gender equality (pay and employment equity, women’s health (nurses in the public sector) and co-worker sexual harassment arbitration studies in the public and private sector).

Dr. Hart’s current research consists of a case study of an offshore helicopter crash in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) in 2009, being a continuation of a research stream on offshore oil safety pursued over the last twelve years, beginning with an analysis in 2000 of safety and industrial relations in the NL offshore oil industry since the 1982 Ocean Ranger disaster. The helicopter case study is based on in-depth archival analysis of industry, labour, government and expert testimony given during the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Safety Board’s Offshore Helicopter Safety Inquiry, plus analysis of the 2010 and 2011 NL Inquiry reports, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada’s investigatory report, and relevant regulatory documentation in Canada, Great Britain and the United States. The three research strands arising so far from this case study focus on corporate social responsibility, the regulatory regime, and risk perception of the industry/employers compared with the union/employees.
