New business programs: Fall 2022

business-programsWe’re excited to revitalize our undergraduate programs as we strive to respond to the changing needs of the business world!

Beginning in Fall 2022, we’ll offer two undergraduate degrees: the bachelor of commerce (B.Comm.) and the bachelor of commerce (co-operative) (B.Comm.(Co-op.)).

Our program’s excellence has been marked by AACSB International accreditation since 2002. Our new programs are important for the future of our faculty and to ensure we continue meeting international accreditation standards for continuous improvement, learner success and effective curriculum management.

Students currently enrolled in business programs at Memorial are not affected by these changes but may contact the Academic Programs Office at busihelp@mun.ca if they wish to explore applying for or transferring to the new programs.

What are the changes?

As of Fall 2022, we’ll offer two degree programs: the B.Comm. and the B.Comm.(Co-op.). Students may choose which degree they wish to pursue based on their anticipated career paths and academic goals. Both programs are selective and competitive.

Business One:
All undergraduate business students will complete a common first year called Business One, after which they must apply for entry into either the B.Comm. or the B.Comm.(Co-op.).

Admission standards:
Both programs will require a minimum entrance average of 65 per cent.

Mandatory professional development:
All undergraduate business students will be required to complete non-credit, professional development seminars. Topics include: professionalism, job searches, career development and individual skill development. These seminars will be offered in partnership with the Gardiner Centre and noted on transcripts.

Course changes:
Modifications have been made to the core program courses; other courses have been revised or removed entirely. Click here for more information.

Most course numbers have been modified to be consistent with other faculties, schools and departments across Memorial. In this numbering system, the first digit in the course number represents the suggested academic year in which a student should take the course.

Core and elective courses are numbered from BUSI 1000-5999. Special topics courses are in the BUSI 6000-6029 and 6041-6060 ranges.

Concentrations:
Students may focus their studies on areas of business in which they have an interest. Focus areas include:

  • Accounting
  • Finance
  • Human resources and labour relations
  • Information systems
  • International business
  • Marketing
  • Operational research
  • Resource-based industries management
  • Small business and entrepreneurship
  • Supply chain management

Academic advising will help guide students to select courses to develop a focus and provide pathways to professional designations.

Formal concentrations will not be offered.

Honours degrees:
Exceptional academic achievement will be recognized through our annual Dean’s List and Awards & Scholarships Program. Students will receive 1st, 2nd or 3rd class designations on their transcripts. Honours designations will not be available.

Minor in international business:
Students at Memorial will no longer be able to complete a minor in international business. Students may still complete internationally-focused business electives.

What degrees will be offered?

B.Comm.:

  • 40 courses (120 credit hours)
  • Flexible course load and delivery
  • Mandatory professional development
  • Study abroad opportunities

B.Comm.(Co-op.):

  • 45 courses (135 credit hours)
  • Structured and full-time (normally completed in five years)
  • Mandatory work terms (3)
  • Study abroad opportunities

Why are the changes necessary?

The world of business is dynamic. It changes rapidly and business professionals must be prepared to adapt to new technologies, processes and cultures. So too do the needs of students change. As such, business schools must be adaptable to meet evolving needs of both business and students.

Our undergraduate programs were last updated in 2010. Over the past two years, we undertook a rigorous review process that included surveys with students and alumni, literature reviews, market scans and stakeholder consultations. We also completed Memorial’s academic unit planning process and the continuous improvement review required for our international accreditation. The goal was to ensure our business programs remain relevant, high quality and produce graduates who are innovative communicators and thinkers, and who possess business and social acumen, ethical awareness and global perspective.

Our international accrediting body is the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). We believe these changes will help us to continue meeting AACSB’s international standards for continuous improvement, learner success and effective curriculum management. Reviewing and redesigning curricula is also an important means of achieving our strategic priorities.
